Does anyone remember the stereo headphones that came with the old NLS machines? They fit real well and blocked out other sounds and had a switch on one side to enable you to switch between stereo and mono depending on what kind of equipment you had. I used to be able to find similar ones from Ann Morris for about $25. The trouble is they don't seem to last long. Does anyone know where I could find a similar set for under $50?
try websites for the blind like APH or anyone else you know that makes NLS tape compatible players.
Hmmm, I'm not sure which manufacturers make those headphones that close out other sounds. I think most companies prefer to make the ones where you can still hear sounds around you. I did like those phones, though. And dittos on the longevity of the wires on headphones. They're made so flimsily now that they don't last long. You may want to call around to local electronics specialty stores like Radio Shack, Best Buy, Circuit City and maybe you have some locally owned ones. Hopefully, you'll get a human who knows what he's talking about. Brands other than Radio Shack you could check out are Sony and Koss. They make quite a wide variety of headphones from less than ten dollars to probably over a hundred dollars. This is all I can tell you.
I utterly agree about the wires;' insidentally, I have (had) a pair of headphones, noise cancelation ones too, but the first pair broke after only a week or two of use and the second broke this week. It makes me so angry about the headphones, oddly a pair of 10 dollar or so headphones were my longest lasting, I got 'em in Christmas 2001 and they lasted untill Thanksgiving break 2003. The headset (another fifty dollar plantronix) I got this christmas lasted about a month, and these headphones (the NC ones) are the nail in the coffain I think. I am using a pair like my first one (the longer lasting); it's the kind with the one wire coming down from the left earpiece and the thing that goes over your ears so there's a sort of half moon sticking out the back of your head... hopefully these will last long as the other kind I had like these did... (I'm still pissed about the fifty dollars I lost though... gotta go to amazon)

I really liked those headphones. I would try a radio shack.

Just for a bit of nostalgia, I remember back in the Seventies and even the Eighties, you could get large sets of headphones that not only shut out all outside sound, but the wire was this rather thick cable that usually ended in a quarter-inch plug. You don't see those much anymore, as most stuff has converted to the smaller plugs and jacks, except for the talking book players. I would wonder if Radio Shack still makes some of those larger headphones.
Speaking of headphones. I'm looking for a specific type. I had a pair of these but they broke and I loved them. They were cheap. But they are the type that go over your ear, kind of like ear clips, and its a flat thing that goes against your ear. They are not ear buds. I really liked them because they were compact like ear buds, but they stayed in place because of the clip. It fit around your ear, and it was tight so you didn't have ti moving all around. I'm not sure if I've explained this well, but I'm having a hard time finding them online. If anyone knows what I'm talking about then let me know because I'd like to find some.
I may have found what you're looking for. Ann Morris Enterprises at
www.annmorris.com
has something she calls hanging headphones. No lengthy description, but I wonder if they're what you described. Go have a look.
I personally use headphones 24/7. I have found the best to be the Sennheiser HD-280 Pro headphones. It make the cheapest equipment sound good. And has excelent frequency responce. 8KHZ./25KHZ. Where to buy? and its cheaper here then wherre I baught mine. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/242411/
